Close view of part of the French cabinet in carved and partly gilded walnut, dating from around 1580, in the Withdrawing Chamber at Hardwick Hall, Derbyshire. The design was derived from an engraving by Jacques I Androuet du Cerceau, and also bears close affinities to the work of the Burgundian maker Hugues Sambin. The small figure paintings on leather are directly comparable to those affixed to other Sambin cabinets.
