Close view of the black velvet bed hangings in the Mary, Queen of Scots' Room at Hardwick Hall, Derbyshire. The existing black velvet is nineteenth-century but is mounted with flowers and borders of Elizabethan embroidery. Despite the name, it seems certain that Mary, Queen of Scots was never in it. In the 1601 inventory this room was known as the Little Chamber within the Best Bedchamber.
